The creator of China’s Great Firewall has been mocked by netizens after being forced to use a VPN during a speech.

Fang Binxing, chief engineer of the Great Firewall and all around bastard, was left red faced on Friday during a talk at his alma mater, Harbin University. Shortly after his lecture on “the importance of the firewall in ensuring Chinese cyber security” began, Fang discovered that he was unable to access the materials he had prepared for the talk because, you guessed it, they were censored.

According to a student present during the lecture, Fang was trying to demonstrate how the South Korean government employs a similar firewall system to prevent South Korean netizens from searching for pro-North-Korean websites. Unfortunately, once Fang navigated to the site he was presented with the classic “page cannot be found” message that expats know and hate so much.

In order to continue his lecture, Fang was left with no other choice than to start up a VPN to access the blocked site.

“Fang Binxing didn’t even give himself a backdoor through the firewall” remarked Weibo user 玩偶1707, while another netizen commented that Fang being blocked by his own system was “hilarious”.

The University cancelled the Q&A session that was scheduled to follow the lecture, presumably to help Fang save face.
